A random wandering through our photo collection occasionally brings up an unpublished nugget. This was from a weekend trip to Bowen Island to be together with a bunch of friends. It didn’t make the the album but it’ll certainly do for a blog entry!

I’m listening to Bette Midlers’ version of Under the Boardwalk as I post this. It’s a weird juxtaposition of seasons – Pacific Northwest fall and Atlantic coast summer – but both bring to mind bright blue skies and sun, promises and fulfillments of a glorious day ahead.

It’s October, and with it both fall rains and spiders have arrived at the labs. This European garden spider is hanging out under one of the alder trees, safe from all but a downpour.

the last rose of summer

It’s not in the greatest spot – not really enough sun – but this miniature rose keeps surprising us with its tiny blossoms. This one, about a half inch in diameter, is likely to be the last of the season.
