Just another trick of perspective… These guys were dozens of feet apart, and the gull – even a big one like this – is not nearly as large as the heron. (The heron’s feathers are ruffled because of a 15-20mph tail wind that was “helping” him through the lagoon.)

Yeah, the image’s been pretty heavily processed. Dark heron, white gull, gray water, whee.
